Brief Description | This module will introduce students to the development of literary theory in the twentieth century and will articulate the premises on which critical practice is based by the use of specific examples. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will introduce students to literary theory of the twentieth century up until 1960. Students study in small groups in a seminar situation guided by a tutor. An example of criticism is read and prepared for group discussion each week, taken from the set anthology. Students familiarise themselves with these examples and analyse the assumptions and critical frameworks inherent in the chosen essays. A particular feature of the module is the emphasis on group work. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of this module students should be able to: a) demonstrate that they have gained a knowledge of some of the key critical movements of the years between the end of the First World War and the 1960s; b) developed skills in close reading and analysis of critical writing; c) demonstrate an understanding of the notion of canon and the implications in what they have read for their own reading and the formation of critical practice within the academic institution.
