Brief Description New Business development provides a complex and challenging opportunity for students to bring together knowledge and skills developed during their studies in a focussed module which deals with real world applications of such learning. The module addresses the new product development process (NPD) including concept/idea generation, market research and evaluation methods and the commercialisation process. Methods to assess the market potential for new products including product positioning, testing, test marketing, and NPD launch are studied. The assessments is the development of a business plan which allows students to integrate learning and to draw upon many concepts learnt over the past three levels of study.
Indicative Syllabus New Business Development addresses all aspects of business planning - new product development, finance, marketing and operations. The module is delivered by lead lectures augmented by extensive on-line support and group and individual tutorials. ICT skills are required.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) Evaluate and employ an integrated approach to new product development.
b) Demonstrate creativity, innovation and enterprise in problem solving and new product development strategy.
c) Utilise evidence based critical assessment of range of personally developed business concepts
d) Synthesise data and concepts from a range of sources to select and develop new products and services
e) Develop and publish an effective business plan with a coherent real world rationale
f ) Critically evaluate new business opportunities to assess operational and financial feasibility

002: 20% Practical Assessment: In-class: Initial proposal (in pairs): 750 words
003: 70% Coursework: Business plan (in pairs) (to include an individual assessment element): 6000 words
