Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover the following topics:

issues relating to teaching and learning to support development in mathematics; planning developmentally appropriate activities which develop positive attitudes to the subject;

knowledge and understanding based upon concrete, practical work; mathematical skills and understanding of key mathematical facts;

engagement in all forms of assessment in order to develop skills in the planning and monitoring process and reporting to others;

mathematical investigations at student's own level to explore the role of language and processes in thinking and learning mathematics, and to develop own subject knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

   A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Identify how mathematical knowledge, understanding and skills develop and know how and why such development can be positively and negatively affected by physical, intellectual, emotional and social development;

2. Understand the nature and role of mathematics at their own level, its place within the curriculum and the importance of mathematical knowledge, understanding and skills;

3. Know about the national requirements, programmes, strategies and expected outcomes in mathematics for those for whom they are responsible;

4. Planning, structuring and differentiating mathematical activities making the learning objectives explicit;

5. Support mathematical development particularly in using and applying mathematics;

6. Work and interact with other adults and professionals to improve mathematical knowledge, understanding and skills, taking full account of issues of equality and diversity.
