Brief Description

This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of communication, language and literacy developed through speaking and listening, reading and writing.  Students will gain knowledge of the requirements of the relevant documentation for their setting.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

 

stages of typical oracy and literacy development;

planning and reviewing learning activities;

exploring ways of creating and stimulating learning environment;

helping learners to communicate effectively;

 identifying ways of promoting inclusion and meeting individual needs to ensure progression.

Learning Outcomes A student passing this module should be able to:... 1. Demonstrate an understanding of development in this area; 2. Demonstrate an understanding of theories related to learning and be aware of relative legislation and documentation; 3. Show awareness of ways development in literacy can be affected by physical, intellectual, emotional and social development; 4. Recognise barriers to learning including those that arise from membership of diverse culttural groups and where English is not the first language; 5. Plan learning that identifies individual needs and ensures progression and continuity; 6. Promote learning in a way which enhances opportunities to succeed and assess and record progress in literacy.
