Brief Description | This module aims to introduce the concept of Special Educational Needs to participants and to examine major policy initiatives introduced over the last twenty years which have had a direct impact on those with Special Educational Needs. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will cover the following topics:
issues around working with Special Educational Needs; issues of equality and diversity including gender, disability, belief, race, ethnicity, and culture; ways in which special needs can act as a barrier to development; Safeguarding issues for children with Special Educational Needs ways through which barriers are broken down in a range of settings through use of particular approaches and systematic learning support. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1. Understand what is meant by the term Special Educational Needs and Inclusion and the impact of working with those with SEN; 2. Understand the distinction between the varying degrees of Special Needs; 3. Be aware of major legislation on SEN and equality over the last twenty years; 4. Be aware of some of the barriers faced by those with SEN, including issues that are affected by gender, ethnicity and culture and be aware of ways of overcoming these; 5. Apply strategies to communicate effectively with those with SEN and support development and progress; 6. Demonstrate awareness of ethical issues and support mental well-being and emotional development, especially where safeguarding issues arise.
