Brief Description | The module aims:
|
Indicative Syllabus | This module enables students to broaden their understanding of academic practice beyond those areas covered in EHE401 Introduction to Academic Practice In Higher Education. The impact of various contextual factors, both external to and from within the institution, on academic provision and practice, and particularly on course development, are considered. These include issues such as employability, sustainability, disability legislation, strategic planning, widening access and participation, quality assurance and enhancement systems and processes, accreditation requirements, regulatory frameworks (e.g. modularisation), etc. A key focus of the module is the nature of the curriculum and the design, development and evaluation of curricula in HE at various levels. This is linked to the consideration of the relationship between curriculum development and professional development, through critical reflection on individual academic practice, and engagement with the processes of needs analysis and personal action planning. The module also addresses the role of research and scholarship in academic practice, particularly in relation to developing research-informed teaching, including the exploration of opportunities for pedagogic research into teaching and learning. |
Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: i. Demonstrate a systematic understanding and critical awareness of how various contextual factors - societal, academic and institutional - impact upon academic practice and provision in HE; ii. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the role of various agencies, bodies and regulatory frameworks in the provision and oversight of HE in the UK, and how they impact upon their own area of academic practice; iii. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of curriculum theory in relation to HE, and a critically informed application of the principles and processes of curriculum design, development and evaluation; iv. Engage critically with research and scholarship in academic practice and undertake research that will inform their own teaching; v. Demonstrate a capacity to: critically reflect upon their own personal and professional practice and development; assess their future learning needs; develop, implement and evaluate an action plan for their own professional development; and communicate the outcomes clearly.
