Restrictions Not available to native speakers of English or non-native speakers who have an IELTS score in excess of 6.5 (or equivalent). Where there is doubt over English capability acceptance will be at the discretion of the module tutor, based on a language assessment.
Brief Description

The module aims to help non-native speakers develop their language and specific skills in the areas of listening, reading and speaking to enable them to contribute to seminars, discussions and presentations.  

Indicative Syllabus

The module includes materials on a number of course related topics. The material is used as the context for the development of vocabulary and language as well as the development of skills in the areas of listening, reading, note-taking, speaking and presentations.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrateknowledge and understanding of key elements in a variety of text types including articles, case studies, lectures and presentations. (PLO5)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and use of appropriate language in academic situations (e.g. presentations and discussions).(PLO8)
  3. Demonstrate appropriate oral skills to enable them to contribute to group presentations, seminar discussions and case studies. (PLO9)
  4. Demonstrate appropriate strategies and skills for discriminative reading, listening and note taking to avoid plagiarism. (PLO6)
  5. Demonstrate problem solving skills relating to key issues in case studies. (PLO5)
