Restrictions Not available to native speakers of English or non-native speakers who have an IELTS score in excess of 6.5 (or equivalent). Where there is doubt over English capability acceptance will be at the discretion of the module tutor, based on a language assessment.
Brief Description

The module aims to help non-native speakers of English develop their writing skills to enable them to write essays and reports suitable for academic study.

Indicative Syllabus -

The module aims to:

  • Introduce students to academic writing conventions (e.g. punctuation, layout, paragraphs, referencing):
  • Develop an appreciation of the issues and skills involved in the writing process (planning, organisation, information seeking):
  • Develop accurate use of grammar, vocabulary and appropriate formality
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to :

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate writing conventions. (PLO8)
  2. Demonstrate evidence of the writing process (e.g. planning, researching, drafting, editing) (PLO8)
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of appropriate structure, grammar and syntax in relation to writing essays and reports. (PLO8)
  4. Reformulate and synthesise information to avoid plagiarism. (PLO6)
  5. Critically evaluate texts for structure and language (PLO5)
