Brief Description

This module is designed to enable students to gain a critical understanding of aspects of Leadership and Management; Working with Others.  The module content is personalised according to the strengths and areas for development of the student.  All students will be required to further develop skills relating to project planning, management of change and the evaluation of impact.

Indicative Syllabus

Content will include:

  • theoretical models of educational leadership and management, including models of organisational change and learning;
  • the management of change in education and its relationship to developing subject teaching and effective professional characteristics;
  • the impact of educational leadership and management in developing effective teaching performance and learning outcomes.
  • skills to lead and manage a change or innovation in practice in response to an identified issue.
Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module successful participants will have:

  • conducted a practice-based enquiry, analysing and researching the impact of different leadership and management approaches in relation to creating effective teaching and learning strategies and frameworks in the classroom and wider-school context;
  • reflected upon practice, research and theory, to inform the critical analysis of different leadership and management approaches in relation to established models of organisational learning;
  • drawn upon research and theoretical models, integrated with personal research findings and understandings, in order to develop solutions to practice-based leadership and management issues relating to teaching and learning;
  • identified and critically analysed practice-based teaching and learning issues emergent from change management and innovation in educational practice as a response to new initiatives, broader policy implementation and agendas;
  • contributed to the distributed leadership and management of teaching and learning, to support the management of innovation and change in the classroom and beyond, working with other individuals and organisations;
  • managed and lead practice-based teaching and learning projects and innovations through developing effective professional learning strategies;
  • demonstrated leadership and management skills focused on positive beliefs, values and attitudes towards change and innovation in education to work effectively with others.


Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff / student contact: 5% (lectures, workshops, tutorials e-tutorials, research planning, data collection and analysis)
Student directed learning and professional practice: 95% to include brokered professional  learning opportunities, observation of lessons, reading, critical reflection and preparation for assessment activity

Total study time is 200 hours.
