Brief Description |
This module is designed to enable students to gain a critical understanding of aspects of how children/young people develop and learn, and the management of their behaviour with reference to inclusion. The module content is personalised according to the strengths and areas for development of the student. All students will be required to develop academic skills relating to critical evaluation of theory, research and professional practice. |
Indicative Syllabus |
This module focuses on how children/young people develop and learn, and the management of their behaviour with reference to inclusion. The syllabus relates to:
- developing understanding in relation to theoretical, research and practice-based knowledge about how young children/young people develop and learn and the management of their behaviour;
- developing pedagogical awareness and effectiveness, informed by an understanding and appreciation of theory, research and ‘best’ practice, to create effective learning environments;
- investigating and reflecting on issues of learner difference, diversity and inclusion to inform teaching and learning practices in their specialism;
- creating innovative practices in teaching and learning addressing the issues of personalisation, independent learning, barriers to learning and behaviour management to meet learner needs.

Learning Outcomes |
On completion of this module successful participants will have:
- conducted a practice-based enquiry, analysing and researching the impact of teaching and learning strategies, designed with reference to ‘best’ practice, research and theory, responding to learner development, diversity and inclusion in the classroom and wider school context;
- critically reflected upon practice, research and theory, evaluating the inclusive processes within the school culture, to develop teaching and learning strategies for supporting diversity and sustaining methods of inclusive practice;
- a critical awareness and recognition of diversity in the classroom which informs effective pedagogical approaches and teaching and learning practices which adapt to differing learning needs and diversity in the classroom and are inclusive and personalised;
- critically examined practice-based issues, broader policy agendas and discourses, and research which surround management and leadership approaches to learner development, diversity in the classroom/school, and the leadership and management of inclusive cultures;
- demonstrated professional learning strategies, focused on positive beliefs, values and attitudes towards change and innovation, with specific reference to the development of learners, diversity and inclusive provision;
- developed knowledge, understanding and professional capacities, to work with other individuals or school organisations to develop teaching and learning practices and frameworks which are inclusive and support diversity.

Learning and Teaching Activities |
Staff / student contact: 5% (lectures,workshops, tutorials e-tutorials, research planning, data collection and analysis)Student directed learning and professional practice: 95% to include brokered professional learning opportunities, observation of lessons, reading, critical reflection and preparation for assessment activity Total study time is 200 hours. |
