Brief Description

This module is designed to enable students to gain a critical understanding of aspects of ‘Subject knowledge for teaching’ and ‘Curriculum and curriculum development’.  The module content is personalised according to the strengths and areas for development of the student.  All students will be required to develop academic skills relating to approaches to research.

Indicative Syllabus
  • Pedagogical subject knowledge and ways of communicating this knowledge.
  • Misconceptions and social constructivist approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Personalising teaching and learning and the use of ‘pupil voice’ to develop teaching and learning approaches.
  • Curriculum design and learning environments.
  • Case study research approaches in educational settings.
Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module successful participants will have:

  • demonstrated systematic understanding of the theoretical and research basis of current learning theories as they relate to current pedagogic practice in schools;
  • critically examine the relationship between current learning theories and their own practice;
  • undertaken and reported on a Case Study into the planning and implementation of a scheme of learning informed by ‘pupil voice’;
  • shown advanced skills of self-management and independent learning;
  • applied sophisticated skills in group work, including the analysis and presentation of material and issues through peer presentations and group discussion;
  • Demonstrated the ability to reflect critically and evaluatively on their own personal understanding of teaching and learning .


Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff / student contact: 5% (lectures, workshops, tutorials e-tutorials, research planning, data collection and analysis)
Student directed learning and professional practice: 95% to include brokered professional  learning opportunities, observation of lessons, reading, critical reflection and preparation for assessment activity

Total study time is 200 hours.
