Brief Description This module will provide students with the opportunity to carry out a critically analytical, in-depth investigation into an issue related to their award title and relevant to their continuing professional development, and to present their findings in a formal manner. Participants will have the opportunity to attend up to 10 hours of teaching on research design and methodology. In addition they will each be allocated a Dissertation Adviser who will act as tutor/supervisor for the study and who will meet with them on an individual basis. Students will be required to submit termly progress report.
Indicative Syllabus Dissertation: Research Design

Once a student has successfully completed 90 credits of the Masters programme, s/he may attend a 12 hour dissertation support programme, which will usually be run as 2 day schools.  This initial teaching will provide guidance on planning a dissertation, reading critically, approaches to research, research ethics, qualitative research methods, quantitative research methods and academic writing. The day schools will run in the Summer term and will be repeated in the Autumn and Spring term as required.  It is anticipated that students will be well prepared to complete and submit their research proposal on completion of the Day Schools.

Individual tutorial supervision (3 tutorials)

Once their dissertation proposal has been approved the student's detailed research planning will be discussed, negotiated and agreed with a Dissertation Adviser, who will then monitor the student’s progress, providing guidance and feedback on draft chapters.

Progress Reports (termly)

Written reports on work-in-progress will be required twice a year to enable students to report on the progress of their dissertations with the course team.
