Brief Description The module provides a student with the opportunity to undertake an approved independent programme of study, which addresses the educational objectives of the Scheme and of the Course. The programme may include: individual tutorials, directed reading etc; attendance at lectures, seminars, workshops or conferences which are not otherwise available within the Course; use of distance learning materials; a placement
Indicative Syllabus Details to be approved on an individual basis, but must include an appropriate element of either critical reflection on published research or small-scale research study.
Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes will be specific to the particular programme undertaken, but will address: One or more of the Postgraduate Modular Scheme's Educational Objectives, which are:

1. to provide, in all programmes, advanced Courses of study and expert academic assistance which enable students to achieve learning outcomes to a standard appropriate to postgraduate level, in one or more of the following areas: knowledge and understanding; analysis and evaluation; synthesis and creativity; self-appraisal; planning and management of learning; communication and presentation; psycho-motor skills;

2. to provide, in appropriate subjects, programmes which prepare students who already have demonstrated intellectual and professional competences through previous qualifications and experience, for entry into professional careers and occupations that otherwise would not be accessible to them;

3. to provide, in appropriate subjects, programmes which offer professional updating and develop advanced professional competences necessary for the assumption of positions of middle management, or membership of appropriate professional institutes;

4. to provide, in appropriate subjects, programmes, which are accredited by professional institutes.

One or more of the Course's Educational Objectives, which are:

1. to establish an appropriate balance between academic rigour and professional relevance (the analysis of relevant theoretical and conceptual models is considered an essential pre-requisite to any application of professional practice);

2. to recognise the nature of change as a phenomenon in institutions, organisations and curricula and the need to develop appropriate strategies to manage change;

3. to engage teachers in ethical debates in resolving issues related to values and practice;

4. to provide a range of programmes which are academically coherent but which allow students a degree of choice of specialism and individual customisation;

5. to provide an accessible high quality learning environment that is innovative, challenging and enterprising; to develop teachers' critical awareness of the TTA Standards and their application to their practice. Normally, a student registered for this 30 CATS point Independent Study module would be expected to initiate a proposal, demonstrate a high level of autonomous planning and execution of the project, and prepare a substantial piece of work for assessment equivalent to 6000 words of coursework.

Learning and Teaching Activities This will depend on the programme of study but may include: individual tutorials attendance at lectures etc use of distance learning materials learning agreements seminars workshops conferences learning sets Where the programme of study includes attendance at modules which are not at postgraduate level, the 'independent' element will normally be in the form of agreed work required to raise the level of study to postgraduate level, for instance via a programme of advanced reading and tutorials.
