Brief Description

Coaching and mentoring are increasingly seen as forms of professional and organisational learning whose effects go far beyond what can be achieved through traditional training courses.  The purpose of this module is to develop a deep understanding of the personal, social and organisational learning processes that take place when these approaches are used competently, and to explore and develop the capabilities and attributes needed to promote them.  The module is designed to serve the needs of those directly involved in coaching and mentoring, and those whose personal effectiveness can be enhanced by a thorough knowledge of what is involved and how it can be of benefit to individuals, teams and the organisation as a whole. Likely beneficiaries therefore include senior and middle leaders/managers, induction tutors, subject mentors and others wishing to develop their practical capabilities as coaches and mentors in educational settings.

The module draws on a full range of approaches to mentoring and coaching and to the development of professional cultures associated with high performance and respect for employees as persons in accordance with relevant ethical codes of practice. Assessment is both academic and practice based and designed to enhance practical capability.

Note that this module is offered in three modes:

  1. University campus based
  2. As work based learning. This means that the vehicle for the development of coaching and mentoring capabilities is current work with a suitable client.. The WBL route is an innovative approach that enables participants to demonstrate current competence and develop future capability. The WBL route is open only to groups of staff in the same school, or to staff groups from more than one school. It is taught entirely within the contracting institution (s). Work for this module is intended to result in impact at school and classroom level
  3. As intensive reading and oral examination only mode for candidates who can establish ‘Advanced Practitioner’ status
Indicative Syllabus

The content of the module includes critical engagement with core concepts and capabilities, such as those outlined in the National Framework for Mentoring and Coaching (CUREE 2004), and with the professional training required by all staff concerned with promoting individual, group and organisational performance. This may include the provision of structured support for professional learners at a variety of levels including team members, those undergoing a job or career stage transition, a student or newly qualified member of staff or a more experienced practitioner who is currently in role, returning to, or new to role.
