Brief Description

The module extends the examination and deployment of the reflective practice cycle and engages students in reflective study of issues arising in their own work setting.

Indicative Syllabus

This module is concerned with the application of theories and principles relevant to the place of work. Students will study the concept of continuing professional development, using frameworks to analyse themselves as reflective practitioners. Students will audit their knowledge, understanding and skills against the HLTA Standards, and use this audit to develop action plans and targets for personal and professional development. Students will evaluate how their learning has impacted on their employment.

Learning Outcomes

 i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. Analyse current research of best practice against which s/he can benchmark and evaluate own practice;
  2. Identify and implement realistic and practical changes in order to improve own practice;
  3. Identify and implement a means of evaluating the success of changes implemented;
  4. Analyse the need for further changes that contribute to a climate of reflective practice within the organisation;
  5. Understand the principles of CPD in the context of the learning organisation within the workplace.

ii. Skills

By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:

  1. Engage in target setting and action planning in relation to their PDP;
  2. Apply academic knowledge and recognise its relevance in their setting;
  3. Confidently apply an evaluative approach to their work practices that enable them to reflect on examples of best practice;
  4. Engage in reflective analysis to enhance own performance within an organisational setting.
