Brief Description Students should contact the EDL course leader before registering for this module.

The module aims to develop students¿ knowledge and understanding of children¿s scientific development. Students will also gain knowledge of the requirements of the relevant sections of the Science National Curriculum in preparation for their role as teaching assistants in primary and special school settings.

Indicative Syllabus The content of this module will focus on developing an understanding of how children learn scientific knowledge, understanding and skills, and the nature and role of science, its place within the curriculum and the importance of scientific language in developing such knowledge, understanding and skills. Students will explore the development of scientific knowledge, understanding and skills as children progress through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The planning and reviewing of developmentally appropriate learning activities in science will result from the use of formative assessment. The role and purpose of scientific investigation and the selection and use of appropriate scientific materials and equipment, including ICT, will be discussed and analysed. Relevant health and safety issues will be addressed.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of effective strategies to promote learning in science;
2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theories related to learning in science, and show awareness of how children’s development in scientific knowledge is affected by their levels of interest and motivation;
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the National Curriculum for science.

ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
1. Planning an appropriate curriculum that identifies the individual needs of children and ensures continuity and progression in the development of scientific knowledge, understanding and skills;
2. Implementing the planned curriculum in a way that will enhance each child’s opportunity to achieve and, if appropriate the attainment targets in NC Science;
3. Monitoring, assessing and recording children’s progress in scientific understanding and using knowledge of individual needs to guide planning.
