Brief Description | The module aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the scope of the primary curriculum. Students will focus on the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to support learning, and will be introduced to the non-core foundation subjects such as: Art and Design, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education (RE), Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE&C) or Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). They will also gain knowledge of the value of display in promoting learning. |
Indicative Syllabus | The content of this module will focus on developing an understanding of the scope of the primary and special school curriculum. Students will be introduced to the non-core foundation subjects such as: Art and Design, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education (RE), Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE&C) or Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). They will gain knowledge of the requirements of the relevant sections of the non-core foundation subjects in the National Curriculum, and non-statutory guidance such as for Religious Education or Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship in preparation for their role as teaching assistants in primary and special school settings. They will also gain knowledge of the value of display in promoting learning. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of effective strategies to promote learning in non-core foundation subjects, RE, PSHE&C or MFL; 2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theories related to learning in these subject areas, and show awareness of how children's development in relevant knowledge is affected by their levels of interest and motivation; 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the relevant sections of the National Curriculum and associated non-statutory guidance. ii. Skills By the end of the module students should have developed skills in: 1. Planning well structured activities, monitoring and supporting teachers' assessment in ways that advance children's learning; 2. Implementing the planned curriculum in the absence of teachers; 3. Designing and developing interactive displays to advance children's learning;Staff/student contact: 20% (lectures/workshops/tutorials/WebCT) |
