Brief Description

This module provides students with the opportunity to study in-depth special educational needs and its implications for early childhood provision.

Indicative Syllabus

This module builds upon knowledge and understanding of inclusive practice to enable students to: critique significant legislation, reports and relevant research; examine a range of learning difficulties in depth; debate controversial issues in SEN such as stigmatisation and labelling, integration and inclusion.  Students will extend their competence in working with young children who have special educational needs  by: analysing and evaluating strategies which promote high quality teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs;  enhancing  collaborative partnerships with others - pupils, parents, colleagues, learning support assistants, external support agencies;  developing and reviewing children’s individual education plans and promoting equality.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Engage critically with legislation, literature and research into the provision for Special educational needs in early years
b) Articulate with confidence  the potential effects of specific educational needs on children’s  attainment and progress
c) Critically evaluate the specific services that are provided for young children with special needs
d)  Show  competence in supporting children with special educational needs and their parents and carers



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
a) Critical analysis and synthesis of a range of information sources
b) Lead, stimulate and structure a debate on complex material
c) Confident and competent use of IT

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact :20% (to include lectures, group work, group tutorials, individual tutorial)
Student directed learning: 80%
