Brief Description

This module explores educational achievement through a critical examination of what constitutes measurement within education.

Indicative Syllabus

This module engages students in a critical examination of current legislation, guidance and research on the educational achievement of children at the end of the early years foundation stage, and within key stage 1 and key stage 2.  Examination of the difference between attainment and achievement underpins the student’s critical analysis of various intervention and assessment strategies.  Society’s values are scrutinized as determinants of policy change; in addition OFSTEDs role in influencing these values and belief systems is debated.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Explain, with confidence, the difference between attainment and achievement
b) Critically analyse the concept of measurement within educational assessment
c) Demonstrate an enhanced knowledge of recent legislation and current research concerning educational attainment and achievement
d) Scrutinise different methods of educational intervention and assessment and how these inform planning for progress
e) Identify and justify the impact and influence of societal values and OFSTED upon measurement in education
f) Reflect critically on the role parents play in supporting children’s learning



 ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
a) Engage in critical analysis of a range of texts, documents and electronic information
b) Interact effectively within the student group to analyse and discuss major issues
c) Engage in informed educational debate

Staff/student contact: approx 20% (to include lectures, seminars, debate)
Student directed learning: approx 80%
