Brief Description

This module aims to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their enhanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of best practice in an early years setting.

Indicative Syllabus

The aims of the module are to prepare students for their future role as managers within early years by providing them with the opportunity to plan all aspects of an early years setting, building upon their understanding of the ‘positive environment’ including: underlying philosophy in early years care and education, building design indoors and outdoors, staffing, marketing, budgeting etc. The module is underpinned by the legislation, policies and procedures studied  throughout the course, which are applied to ensure compliance with benchmark standards from Ofsted, ECM and EYFS.  Students study management theory and undertake a detailed examination of recent research into early years practice in order to inform their decisions.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding.
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a)       Engage in analysis of management theory in relation to early years practice
b)       Evaluate  the constraints and practicalities of planning and managing an early years setting
c)       Apply and justify legislative frameworks to real life scenarios
d)       Critically evaluate the factors contributing to a ‘positive environment’



ii. Skills. 
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
a)       Applying theory to practice
b)       Applying ‘best practice’ theory to a practical scenario
c)       Decision making and problem solving
d)       Researching and synthesizing information

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff / student contact: 20% (lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical workshops)
Student directed learning: 80%
