Brief Description

This module provides a means of accessing the second year of BSc Social Work for students who have been selected for admission to that award and have successfully achieved at least 120 CAT points on modules of one of FdSc Health and Social Care Practice, FdSc Children and Young Peoples Practice, FdSc Mental Health Practice or FdA Supporting Youth Practice. Access to the second year of the award is also dependent on the availability of places. It covers matters specific to the role of the social worker and addresses those elements of the first year of the social work degree not included within the Foundation Degree.

Indicative Syllabus This module will cover the following topics:- - the role of the social worker in the contemporary organisation of the personal social services; - the sociology of the family, education, gender, sexuality, crime, religion and deviance and their application to social work; - the sociology of power, class, ethnicity, race, racism, migration and immigration in relation to social work; - the development of the welfare state from 1906-2006 with particular emphasis on underpinning theory and policy developments in health care, social care, employment, housing and criminal justice; - the development of social work since 1945; - key themes, continuities, changes issues and debates in social work, including the role of the service user’s voice; - learning from experienced social workers; - fitness for practice as a social worker - suitability for access to the social work degree
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
. On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a); Discuss the development of the welfare state from 1906 and underpinning theoretical models;
b) Elucidate the impact of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion, housing and crime on social work practice;
c) Give an account of the development of social work since the advent of the welfare state;
d) Illustrate how the historical continuities in the provision of personal social services continue to manifest themselves;
e) Relate key concepts and issues in sociology and psychology to social work and social work practice;
f) Integrate social work with the sociology of the family, education, gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, migration, immigration, crime, social class and deviance.
g) Meet the requirements for Fitness to Practice as a Social Worker and Suitability for access to the Social Work Degree at level 2 of that programme.


ii. Skills
. On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Relate theory to practice in social work;
b) Analyse the impact of the past on the present;
c) Prepare for the social work placement.
