Brief Description This module will develop skills and knowledge in group-work based interventions using a range of evidence-based approaches. The approach can be applied to many areas of work, and will use the enhancement of parenting skills as an example. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.
Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the skills and knowledge of group work including relationship building, the development of trust and group dynamics;
  • the use group work for development;
  • awareness of the impact of issues of inclusion and exclusion, diversity and equal opportunity on group processes;
  • methods of engaging with hard-to-reach groups;
  • the skills and knowledge of informal and non-formal education  in a range of settings including planning and review;
  • the application of group work and informal education in different settings including centre-based, residential and outreach;
  • peer choice
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
. On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Compare and contrast a range of different approaches to the facilitation of groups for different purposes;
b) Differentiate the different expectations and preferences for group interaction and caring style for a diverse range of families, carers or service user groups;
c) Discuss the nature of the leadership role in different kinds of groups;
d) Evaluate the process, pros and cons of group work;
e) Identify the process and value of informal and non-formal education as a method of intervention for psycho-social difficulties;
f) Plan a programme of activity for a group;
g) Apply the process and substance of group work to improve the relationships of group members.


ii. Skills
. On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Apply teamwork skills, problem solving skills and skills of reflection to the leadership of groups;
b) Plan group activity;
c) Use communication skills to deliver informal education.
