Brief Description

This module supports the development of skills in working on a one-to-one basis with parents who are in difficulties and with carers of children and young people with a disability and/or mental ill-health. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.

Indicative Syllabus This module will cover the following topics: - The Every Child Matters policy; - The Children Acts; - the range of universal, targeted and specialist services in childcare; - preventative and interventive strategies; - methods of signposting and classification of services that can be signposted; - one-to-one methods of supporting parents including home visits and telephone counselling including etiquette and boundaries; - the nature and importance of good relationships between worker and family and between family members; - significant and emerging theories and research about improving attachments - the skills of developing good attachments, - skills of interviewing, building trust, negotiating boundaries, tending, coaching, feedback and in working with emotions; - childcare law and the consequences of being looked after or adopted for the development of the child; - the consequences of parental disability, mental ill health or addiction on the development of the child.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Critically consider the features of good relationships with adults and with children;
b) Evaluate methods for assessing attachment and improving the strength of attachments through one-to-one work;
c) Analyse methods and identify services to support parents experiencing a range of difficulties;
d) Evaluate ways of working in partnership with other professionals when there is suspicion or evidence of abuse and there are legal implications;
e) Propose ways of supporting carers in their role as foster parents or adopters;
f) Examine the most common forms of childhood disability and mental ill health and methods of supporting those needs.

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Communicate orally and in writing with parents and children;
b) Practice reflectively in order to support individuals in their relationships;
c) Coach the skills of others.
