Module Title Advanced Concepts in Networking
Module Code CT6017
Module Tutor Kevin Walter
School Computing and Technology
CAT Points 30
Level of Study 6
Pre-requisites Before taking this module you must pass IT230 or pass CT5013
Co-requisites None
Restrictions Cannot be counted with NEC305
Brief Description

This module provides the participant with an in-depth understanding of the design rules, configuration options, and media selection criteria for today's most popular LAN and internetworking technologies. Students are taught ICT design skills from a real world perspective, with significant class time devoted to actual network design and its impact on the organizations infrastructure. Students will use vendor specification sheets to design networks within a building, campus, and wide area network (WAN) configurations. Students will be able to undertake work within industry applying the professional skills they have developed.

Indicative Syllabus

LAN Designs;- Designing networks using the current networking technologies such as UTP, STP, FTP and Fibre cables. The design will take into account the following characteristics of the cabling and wireless systems: Standards, Performance, Components, Design Recommendations and Ethernet options. Network Technologies - Ethernet, Token Ring, Optical Fibre, Network Backbones and non-physical networks using the technologies of Infra-Red, Microwave and Radio. Network Implementation - Site Survey to include the following:- Network Topologies , System design , Route design, Right-of-way and way leaves. Scope of work and design estimates. Selection of a suitable networking medium. Students will study and investigate networking scenarios for their practical’s and coursework throughout the module

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Design systems that connect mobile devices and undertake analysis of network traffic, storage media (cards, disks) for evidence of misuse.
  2. Analyse the business requirements for an ICT solution.
  3.  Create a detailed design to meet customer requirements.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to collect relevant information across a range of areas pertaining to a current situation.
  5. Analyse information and synthesize it into an appropriate form in order to evaluate alternative decisions for discerning and appraising management strategic alternatives.
  6. Critically evaluate ICT design proposals
