Brief Description

This module investigates techniques for visualizing abstract or invisible phenomenon in real and virtual worlds. The module would be suited to a student who wished to obtain in-depth knowledge of current developments in 2D and 3D computer graphics and visualization techniques in order to explain complex ideas in a visual form.

Indicative Syllabus

The module investigates the variety of techniques used to visualize data and complex concepts via computer graphics. Issues covered include data graphs, volume and vector visualization, 3D and VR visualization techniques for showing time, motion and emotion. Application areas for improving visualization by the use of appropriate animation are also explored.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. critically evaluate methods for displaying data and assess their value in the communication of ideas,
  2. analyse suitable areas for the application of visualisation techniques such as lighting, luminosity and radiosity,
  3. develop a range of visualisation techniques to show complex data and concepts,
  4. critically evaluate methods of using 3D graphical objects or icons as a visualisation or interface style,
  5. create and evaluate an effective piece of visualisation/multimedia which enables a user to improve their understanding of a complex mass of data or an abstract concept
