Brief Description

The module explores advanced database systems, their management and their corporate role.  At the heart of information systems lie database management systems, transactional database systems, data warehouses, e-commerce databases and databases for storing complex data.  This module looks at the technologies, data models and policies that such systems require.

Indicative Syllabus

Database systems are important to business, industry and science.  IT professionals need to critically assess the opportunities and implications presented by such systems. They also need the expertise and acumen to select, develop, manage and exploit these systems.

This advanced module explores: database management systems and associated technologies; the management of database systems; and the data modeling options facilitating the storage and use of data. Investigation into the theories that govern the design of database systems is combined with an analysis of advanced concepts through investigation, and subsequent practical implementation and critical evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  1. explain and evaluate the fundamental theories and requirements that influence the design of modern database systems
  2. assess and apply database functions and packages suitable for enterprise database development and database management
  3. critically evaluate alternative designs and architectures for databases and data warehouses
  4. discuss and evaluate methods of storing, managing and interrogating complex data
  5. explain and critically evaluate database solutions for data exchange
  6. analyse the background processes involved in queries and transactions, and explain how these impact on database operation and design
