Brief Description

This module investigates advanced concepts in Forensic Computing and introduces statistical techniques used for intelligent analysis of forensic data. This module also introduces concepts, technologies and tools used in Forensic DNA profiling, which can be used to name suspects or exonerate the innocent.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. Statistical techniques used for intelligent analysis of forensic data.
  2. Statistical methods, probability theory and biological concepts used in Forensic DNA profiling
  3. Forensic DNA Databases and Bioinformatics
  4. Ethical Hacking
  5. Cloud-computing
  6. Malware: viruses, worms, and the Trojan horse defense
  7. Tools for managing forensic workflow.
  8. Data encryption and decryption techniques
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Flexibly and creatively use statistical techniques and tools to intelligently analyze the forensic data.
  2. Critically analyze the use of Forensic DNA profiling, and show awareness of the evidential opportunities and challenges posed by them.
  3. Evaluate the use of data encryption and decryption, and show awareness of the evidential challenges that it poses.
  4. Synthesize significant issues relating to the operation of malware, and deploy appropriate measures to prevent their spread.
  5.  Appreciate the stages of forensic workflow, show knowledge of tools for managing it, and judge their appropriateness.
  6. Apply skills relevant for academic progression and career development within the sector.
