Brief Description

This module covers the business rationale for using the web as a solution to a business problem, together with the core technologies required to create such solutions. Students will create structured websites using both scripts (eg: html; CSS; JavaScript) and industry-standard software. The module would be suited to a student in any computing field who wishes to obtain an understanding of the Internet, its facilities and technologies and gain experience in production techniques.

Indicative Syllabus

The module covers topics related to an understanding of the Internet, its structures and protocols, the production of html documents and web pages using a range of software and scripting standards. In addition to dealing with issues relating to the development and maintenance of web sites, students will complete a substantial amount of practical work creating websites incorporating the latest web 2 facilities. Students will have the opportunity to design and implement a product from a client brief.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. understand the coding and technical requirements of html web pages and compare alternative tools for the creation of web page components,
  2. demonstrate a broad understanding of standard web technologies,
  3. identify issues of significance in selecting appropriate hosting / development strategies eg: Search Engine Optimisation,
  4. apply skills relevant for academic progression and career development within the sector,
  5. create a portfolio of web-based material illustrating a range of concepts,
  6. utilise a range of information search techniques to provide evidence for their work using Harvard referencing.
