Brief Description

The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the important features of the internal and external environments within which all organizations must operate. It examines those elements of the environment that impinge upon an organization’s ability to achieve its mission and satisfy its objectives, giving particular focus to organizational behavior, managerial work and the role of information and communication technologies in the context of business.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will include the nature of organizational behavior and managerial work in the business environment. It will also look at individual differences such as personality, attitudes and perceptions, and the importance of motivation in understanding people. Apart from individual differences, the importance of groups and teams will also be studied. Research into organizational structure and culture, how organizations use ICTs in practice to support their aims and objectives and the implications associated with developing, implementing and using ICTs for this purpose, both on the organization itself and on individuals will be part of the program.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

  1.  understand the economic, social, political and technological influences on organisations and managers
  2. appreciate the importance of the ethical and competitive environment in which managers operate
  3. discuss the social and organisational impact of information and communications technologies and information systems
  4. appreciate the issues associated with real-world business and ICT problems
  5. evaluate the concepts and theories relating to the management of people, including for example, motivation, group dynamics, perception , the individual etc
  6. understand the range of organisational structures and functions including the nature of managerial roles, the concept of organisational culture and the importance of managers as agents of change
