Brief Description | The module aims to examine the notion of the family and family structures in relation to the community and contemporary society, and to explore the roles , rights and responsibilities of family and community members in the promotion of sustainable futures. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will cover the following topics:
personal, community and societal expectations of 'the family'; effective ways to support and empower individual children and their families; children as active learners within their own family; the changing roles, rights and responsibilities of children within families; development of working partnerships with families and communities; promotion and facilitation of empowerment, care and education; the development of anti-oppressive, inclusive practice; the role of effective communication and professional relationships in relation to the promotion of equal opportunities and family empowerment; marginalization of families both within communities and twenty-first century society. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:...
1. Articulate the differing concepts of the family and family structures within a historical perspective; 2. Identify and examine the influence of historical, cultural and social context upon family responsibility within society; 3. Identify and evaluate the influence of personal value and belief systems within family structures and their function; 4. Identify and explain family and community support structures that are available to empower families and communities; 5. Employ differing methods of working effectively in partnership with families and communities; 6. Utilize current research findings and projects to promote and support development of anti-oppressive, inclusive practice. |
