Brief Description | The module aims to provide students with an understanding of special needs, through a study of inclusive practice and the need to listen to / ‘tune into’ the child. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will cover the following topics:
the concept of inclusion in relation to children with special needs; the need to listen to and ‘tune into’ children to identify and cater for individual needs; integration versus special schools; strategies to support special needs; parental involvement and current legislation and guidance; the need for a labelling of children within modern society. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:...
1. Develop effective strategies to listen to and 'tune into children'; 2. Understand the legislative guidelines for special needs; 3. Acquire the knowledge to enable them to plan and develop suitable strategies and environments for SEN children; 4. Have a broad understanding of the debate relating to inclusive education and ethical practice; 5. Identify strengths and weaknesses relating to an inclusive environment for SEN children; 6. Have an understanding of the importance of interpersonal communication when developing parent partnership. |
