Brief Description

This module aims to develop a secure knowledge and understanding of ‘what makes children tick’. Through the study of behaviour and development students will investigate the nature of childhood and the distinctive characteristics of individual children from 0 - 8 years. Students will become familiar with the main theories on the development of young children covering cognitive, social, emotional, language and physical development.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

 

knowledge of child development;

how neuroscience and education inform the creation of stimulating learning environments;

social, emotional, linguistic, intellectual, and physical elements of development;

study of children through observations, experimentation and peer led enquiry; role and value of play theory;

attachment theory;

parenting styles;

nature/nurture debate;

promotion of sustainable professional practice that furthers the best interest of the child.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

 

1.   1. Demonstrate an understanding of typical social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic and physical development of children between 0-8 years;

2.   2. Recognise the influence of biological, social and environmental factors on individual and collective child development

3.   3. Evaluate the role and contribution of play in the provision of a secure, healthy and stimulating environments that are conducive to positive child development;

4.   4. Demonstrate, based upon theoretical knowledge and practice, an understanding of effective adult roles in the support and development of children’s innate and acquired abilities, competencies and resilience;

5.   5. Identify and justify the role of childhood psychology in the effective provision of enabling and empowering environments to develop children’s attitude and capabilities to learning;

6.   6. Utilise current research findings and projects to promote and support the development of anti-oppressive, inclusive and empowering practice.
