Brief Description

The module aims to explore the fascinating lives and social worlds of children, and the phenomenon of childhood, exploring how children learn to become members of the society in which they live.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

 

social theories of childhood;

government and policy perspectives of childhood;

historical views of childhood and children, including childhood today;

digital childhoods;

children’s cultures;

the commercialisation and adulteration of childhood;

the schoolification of childhood;

the globalisation of childhood;

children as active social agents;

the future of childhood.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

 

1. Demonstrate an understanding of childhood as a social construction;

2. Appreciate the range of influences on childhood;

3. Collect and utilise information from a variety of sources to make informed judgements;

4. Articulate how the study of childhood affects his/her own performance as a practitioner;

5. Engage in reflective practice through application of new knowledge to placement experiences;

6. Use interpersonal, communication and creative skills to present information to a range of audiences.
