Brief Description The module provides an introduction to the issue of crime in society, and explores the socio-cultural context of crime and criminality in the UK and globally.
Indicative Syllabus

1) The social construction of crime and criminality;
2) Representations of crime e.g. in the media and national statistics;
3) The socio-cultural context of crime and criminality, taking account of class, age, gender, race, ethnicity, time and place;
4) A range of sociological theoretical perspectives in relation to crime;
5) Overview of social policies and criminal justice systems;
6) National and global issues in relation to crime.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding

On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate:
1) An understanding of the socio-cultural context of crime and criminality in relation to class, age, gender, race, ethnicity and place;
2) A critical awareness of the representation and social construction of crime and criminality;
3) Knowledge of a range of theoretical perspectives in relation to crime;
4) An understanding of national and global issues relating to crime.



ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
1) Critically analyse the social construction of crime through a variety of sociological theoretical perspectives;
2) Interpret, compare and contrast a range of different representations of crime;
3) Search for and retrieve information from a variety of sources.
