Brief Description

The module explores the management, governance and configuration of database systems.  Students will gain a practical understanding of database management as well as an appreciation of the policies, options and considerations pertaining to modern database operations.  The module is relevant to anyone interested in the secure storage, usage and lifecycle-management of data and information in modern organisations.

Indicative Syllabus

Database systems are a core component of operational systems, management information systems, and internet applications such as social-network sites.  IT professionals need to critically assess the database management opportunities and implications presented by representative use cases and technologies.

This module explores: database management systems and associated technologies; the management and governance of database systems; and, the data modelling options facilitating the efficient storage and use of data. Investigation into the theories that govern the design of database systems is combined with an analysis of advanced concepts through policy consideration, investigation and subsequent practical implementation and critical evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Explain the requirements that influence the design of modern database management systems and have a deep understanding of how these impact on system design

2. Critically assess and apply policies and functions suitable for enterprise database management

3. Critically evaluate alternative designs and architectures for databases and data warehouses

4. Determine appropriate policies and methods for the secure and efficient life-cycle management of data and information

5. Explain the background processes involved in queries and transactions, and determine how these impact on database operation and design
