Brief Description

This module is designed for students with a range of backgrounds. Consequently, it addresses both fundamental and advanced issues of IS and IT management. It concentrates on the role of IS and IT in business and its implications for management and the development of strategy. Some KTP projects undertaken by the Department will be used as case studies to provide students with an opportunity of experiencing practical applications of IS/IT management.

Indicative Syllabus

This module covers the areas of web-based technologies; information systems, their applications and management; business strategy and IT/e-business strategy; and business intelligence (data warehouse and data mining). Software and IS application development will also be addressed with focus on how to increase the success rates of software application development and how to integrate IT/e-business strategy to enhance business performance. Other topics to be covered are analysis of user requirements, integration of business activities and information systems and wider societal implications. Real case studies will be used as examples.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to:
1. Analyse and understand benefits and risks of information and communication technologies
2. Understand and describe business functions of a typical organisation
3. Comprehensively analyse and evaluate factors influencing the development of an integrated business strategy
4. Apply practical methods for developing IT strategies, managing and dealing with changes resulting from the introduction of IT
5. Solve the problems associated with typical IT/IS management as a team member with good communication skills
6. Demonstrate appropriate application of standard tools and techniques to plan and implement tasks.
