Brief Description Applications on the World Wide Web are often based on the HTML and XML languages and information from relational databases. This module will focus on the knowledge and skills required to develop systems for this aspect of the internet.
Indicative Syllabus Web page creation using mark-up languages such as HTML, and CSS. Using XML to encode data. Transformation of XML data to XHTML using XSL Server-side scripting including access to relational databases. Client-side scripting using JavaScript.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to:

  1. understand the possibilities and constraints of HTML mark-up
  2. create Web pages incorporating both client-side and server-side scripts
  3. analyse the structure of data and apply appropriate XML mark-up
  4. evaluate alternative approaches to delivery of web pages
  5. understand the importance of standard protocols
  6. design, create and evaluate web pages incorporating active elements.


Learning and Teaching Activities

Approximately 30 hours staff/student contact, 70 hours of directed study and 100 hours of independent study
