Brief Description

The module critically analyses the complex relationship and interconnectivity between the external and internal environments of organisations.

Indicative Syllabus

The module focuses on how external factors affect organisations and how organisations cope with operating in dynamic turbulent environments. It develops key frameworks that allow a critical analysis of the prime external drivers to be undertaken. From this, internal analytical frameworks are introduced that demonstrate how these factors affect the design of the organisation¿s internal structure and how organisations respond in order to deliver value to their key stakeholders.

Students will be inducted into the expectations of the learning approach being adopted for the programme.

Learning Outcomes

i.   Knowledge and Understanding: 

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Use the relevant analytical frameworks to identify general environmental factors influencing organisations.         
b) Identify different types of organisation and undertake a stakeholder analysis of these organisations.
c) Critically apply the relevant frameworks to organisations affected by environmental change.
d) Undertake a SWOT analysis and advise on the opportunities and threats resulting from external changes.         
e) Assess the impact of changes in the environment on organisations and analyse how organisations should respond to these changes.
f) Identify and examine how changing stakeholder requirements influence the design of the internal business structure.
g) Critically evaluate the significance of competition and its influence on business design.
h) Provide a synthesis that encompasses both external and internal analysis.



ii. Skills:   

By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:

a) Communication and literacy: Assignment and classroom activity will deploy range of communication skills.

b) Problem-solving: Case study work to identify issues and propose logically derived solutions to those issues identified.

c) Independent Learning and Working: Assignment will require student to carry out an investigation of an organisation, whilst preparation must me undertaken for weekly seminar activities.

d) Working with Others: small group activities in class and group case study work.

e) Specific vocational skills. The module introduces students to the importance of the interaction between an organisation and its environment

f) General intellectual skills. The module aims to develop the students¿ ability to analyse and interpret external information. It further allows them to develop a critical awareness of how external changes impact on the internal workings of an organisation.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/WBL tutor/student contact:  20 hours consisting of a mix of lectures and tutorials with case work.
Student directed learning:  80 hours. Background reading, tutorial case and assignment preparation.

A variety of learning methods will be used: 

  • Lectures to provide the overall framework
  • Group work through case study analysis
  • Group presentations
  • Independent study

For work based learning delivery, students will devise an agreed work plan with their Personal/Specialist Learning Advisor to meet their individual learning needs to achieve the module learning outcomes.
