Brief Description

This module provides students with a foundation in quantitative techniques and accounting methods. It provides an insight into the methodologies and their application within organisations, public and private.

Indicative Syllabus

Use of accounting concepts to construct final accounts; financial performance indicators; costing techniques; budgets; collecting primary and secondary data; analysing, interpreting and presenting data, (e.g. measures of location, correlation, regression, chi-square, time series).

Students will be inducted into the expectations of the learning approach being adopted for the programme. 

Learning Outcomes

i   Knowledge and Understanding: 
By the end of the module, students should be able to:

a) Apply appropriate accounting concepts and conventions to construct a basic set of final accounts.         
b) Critically evaluate the financial performance of a business entity using a range of performance indicators and other relevant information.   
c) Use a variety of costing techniques to calculate and evaluate the cost of products and services.
d) Analyse the use of budgets as a tool for management control and understand the difference between profit and cash and the consequences of poor cash management.
e) Apply and evaluate a range of appropriate quantitative techniques to obtain information.          
f) Apply appropriate quantitative techniques and draw reasoned conclusions from the information obtained.   
g) Identify the specific information needs, both qualitative and quantitative, of relevant management functions. 
h) Develop and present information in different ways, as appropriate to the needs of the recipient, using information technology to support the managing information process.    
i) Work collaboratively with others in the application, interpretation and communication of the above.



ii. Skills:   

By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:

a) Application of numerical techniques: Use of basic arithmetic and simple formulae.

b) Problem Solving:  Mini case studies, data-handling and statistical exercises.

c) Communication and literacy:  Assignments and report writing.

d) Information communication and technology:  Use of calculator, spreadsheets, internet and CD ROMs.

e) Working with others:  Small group activities.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/WBL tutor/student contact:  20 hours consisting of a mix of lectures and tutorials with case work.
Student directed learning:  80 hours. Background reading, tutorial case and assignment preparation.

For work based learning delivery, students will devise an agreed work plan with their Personal/Specialist Learning Advisor to meet their individual learning needs to achieve the module learning outcomes.
