Brief Description

This is a skills based module which deals with the effective and responsible management of people in the workplace.

Indicative Syllabus

This module takes a critical and evaluative view on how managers can: staff the organisation with effective personnel; train and develop people; develop and lead effective customer centred work teams; communicate effectively; create a motivating working environment; deal with disciplinary and grievance issues; manage the performance of subordinates and self.

Students will be inducted into the expectations of the learning approach being adopted for the programme.

Learning Outcomes

i.   Knowledge and Understanding: 

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Critically evaluate recruitment and selection tools in the context of an appropriate process for their organisation.
b) Develop and review effective approaches to training and development for their organisation.
c) Critically review the importance of effective teamwork and leadership for the delivery of high quality customer service.
d) Understand the complex nature of the processes of motivation and how they can be applied to the motivation of individuals and groups.
e) Consider the key features of performance management systems, developing a critique of commonly used systems.
f) Explore the key elements of fair grievance and disciplinary procedures and how to develop relevant policy.



ii.  Skills:   

By the end of the module & or tutor guided independent study and learning students should have developed skills in:

a) Communication and literacy: through development of a range of oral and written communication skills. Giving and receiving feedback in order to improve performance.

b) Problem solving: through the consideration of work-based issues and the application of problem solving techniques to those issues.

c) Working with others: through group activities designed to develop team building and leadership skills.

d) Specific vocational skills: by developing the ability to plan, deliver and evaluate training events; judging the appropriateness of informal vs. formal procedures to disciplinary and grievance issues; carrying out fair and methodical recruitment and selection procedures; managing employee performance.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/WBL tutor/ student contact:  20 hours
Taught sessions will consist of a mix of tutor input, group work, student presentation, case studies and role plays.
Student directed learning:  80 hours

This will take the form of reading around a topic, researching an issue through interviews, simple surveys and informal discussions and assignment preparation.  Frequently this will be done as part of a group exercise.

For work based learning delivery, students will devise an agreed work plan with their Personal/Specialist Learning Advisor to meet their individual learning needs to achieve the module learning outcomes
