Brief Description

An independent study offers an opportunity to develop the curriculum into new but relevant areas of interest. This might involve the theory and practice of projects being undertaken in the workplace or detailed research into new topics appropriate at this level.

Indicative Syllabus

The independent study can be undertaken on any topic related to the aims and objectives of community engagement and governance, allowing deeper or wider exploration of particular themes at high level.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

i. Knowledge and understanding

  1. demonstrate the development of specialist knowledge relevant to the aims and learning outcomes of the Community Engagement and Governance course.
  2. assess the relationship between theory and practice in a specific area of knowledge


ii. Skills

  1. demonstrate successful negotiation skills
  2. plan, implement and evaluate projects
  3. work independently and take the initiative in solving problems
  4. research, write and present material to a professional standard
Learning and Teaching Activities

Each student will be entitled to 3.5 hours of personal or small-group assistance. Private study, including development and agreement of a brief, research, reading, analysis, synthesis and presentation makes up the total of 150 study hours.

002: 90% Coursework: Portfolio: 3500 words or equivalent
