Brief Description

You investigate and evaluate new perspectives on management in the workplace.  You examine the strategic responsibilities of managers and have an opportunity to develop expertise in a specialist area such as law, finance, technical knowledge or human resources.

Indicative Syllabus

You take a fresh look at management in the workplace whether you are a participant or observer, a manager or managed.  The work of a manager is examined from two angles.  First you investigate and reflect on a manager’s responsibility for performance and evaluate outcomes; these include strategy, setting and achieving goals, involving stakeholders, co-ordinating the work of an organisation, a department or activity, linking local activities to the wider context, creating harmony and communication.  Secondly you develop your expertise in a specialist area of work that makes a contribution to the management of people, activities or projects.  For example, you might become an expert in Health and Safety, employment or charity law, financial planning, heritage or cemetery management, working with children, environmental technology or sports development – you choose your area of expertise depending on your interests.

Most importantly, you seek new ideas and perspectives and research information, experiences and opinions from new sources beyond your own workplace.  You might organise visits or exchanges with other agencies, discuss experiences with representatives of other organisations and research published ideas.
