Brief Description

This module builds on CEG101 and develops students’ understanding of the principles and practices of community governance and engagement, accountability and community leadership.  It examines aspects of the political system affecting communities and evaluates governance and community engagement in specific communities. 

Indicative Syllabus

This module provides opportunities for developing a deeper and more critical understanding of local communities and the changing political context or system within which they operate.  It evaluates and compares the perspectives of different organisations influencing community governance.  It encourages investigations into the political and other influences on decisions that affect local communities.  Students develop investigative skills using questionnaires and interviews to find out what people think about aspects of community governance such as partnership, service delivery, council activity.  The module critically examines the principles and practices of community governance and engagement, accountability and community leadership, facilitating an assessment of aspects of community governance in specific situations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

i. Knowledge and understanding

  1. Evaluate and compare the perspectives of different organisations influencing community governance
  2. Assess critically the changing influences of government, the political system and sources of power
  3. Conduct reliable qualitative and quantitative research to inform a critical review of arrangements for community governance or engagement
  4. Reflect critically on practice and principles to demonstrate a detailed understanding of community engagement and governance


ii. Skills. 

  1. Research, analyse and evaluate information from a wide range of sources
  2. Communicate logical, well-informed arguments in a professional manner

This is a distance learning module with 300 hours over a full academic year.
Staff/student contact: 10% (residential school, face-to-face and online support)
