Brief Description | The Dissertation provides each student with the opportunity to use their own writing to investigate new perspectives and developments within their chosen genre and experiment with elements of craft and style and apply these in new ways to a body of original creative writings. The Dissertation will further allow the student to come to an in-depth understanding of their own processes and the critical positions within their own work, which will be demonstrated in the accompanying extended essay containing their reflective critical understanding. |
Indicative Syllabus | In terms of subject matter, the Dissertation will be required to focus on an area of direct relevance to the rest of the content of the MA, and to address itself to the debates within their creative milieu in an original and artistically coherent fashion which will make appropriate use of the resources available, and to be discussed and agreed with a tutor whose academic specialism enables her or him to supervise the project successfully. Proposals must be submitted on the appropriate PMS form for consideration by a sub-committee of the Course Board of Studies. |
Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate: 1. a specialist knowledge of a chosen genre of writing directly related to the taught content of the degree; 2. a detailed understanding of the relation of the chosen subject to issues discussed elsewhere on the course particularly with regard to the creative processes and stylistic development; 3. a comprehensive practical appreciation of methods of scholarly research and presentation. |
