Brief Description This module will give the student a solid grounding in a wide variety of practical techniques for teaching creative writing at school and university level and to analyse the appropriate theoretical considerations that inform them. The module will offer training in specific methods / techniques appropriate as preparation for research or professional practice. (RM)
Indicative Syllabus Students will examine a wide variety of trigger and development techniques that are used in the teaching and development of writers in a workshop or seminar environment. Students will critically reflect on the practical sessions with particular reference to the theoretical background informing the techniques.
Learning Outcomes Learning outcomes & Research Methods skills (RM)
On successful completion of the module students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
1. analyse and evaluate ways in which creative writing may be triggered in students;
2. critically analyse particular techniques commonly used for the development of student writers’ creative works;
3. synthesise a range of critical, theoretical and writerly approaches to the teaching of creative writing which have emerged in the last ten years.
4. be alert to the possibilities and difficulties attendant on the study of many aspects of contemporary writing. (RM)
5. use the research tools in the Learning Centre cogently; and approach longer pieces of writing confidently, in the knowledge of appropriate strategies for the scholarly discipline of Creative Writing. (RM)

002: 40% Coursework: Practical: 40 minutes (2500 words or equivalent)
003: 50% Coursework: Standard: 3000 words or equivalent
