Brief Description The purpose of this module is to give a broad understanding of the creative process as described by a variety practicing writers and also a number of academic theorists in the field. The module will facilitate the student to synthesise a broad understanding of various theories related to the creative process and undertake a detailed analysis of their own creative process and evaluate it in relation to what other writers and theorists have written on the subject. The module will offer training in specific methods / techniques appropriate as preparation for research or professional practice. (RM)
Indicative Syllabus Students will study a series of texts in which various writing practitioners and theorists discuss the workings of the creative process. Student will be encouraged to relate these theories to their own experience as writers through seminars and in class discussion in order to synthesise their own theoretical approach to the creative process.
Learning Outcomes Learning outcomes & Research Methods skills (RM)
On successful completion of the module students will demonstrate the ability to:
1. analyse and evaluate their own creative processes in relation to what other writers and theorists have written on the subject;
2. analyse and critically evaluate a range theoretical texts written on the creative process;
3. synthesise wider perspectives on the creative process and to place these within an appropriate theoretical framework.
4. be alert to the possibilities and difficulties attendant on the study of many aspects of contemporary writing. (RM)
5. use the research tools in the Learning Centre cogently; and approach longer pieces of writing confidently, in the knowledge of appropriate strategies for the scholarly discipline of Creative Writing. (RM)
