Brief Description This module is independent from, but complementary to, CCW401 & CCW402; it will consider how the texts chosen for study relate to current theoretical and critical perspectives from a writerly point of view. The texts chosen for study may be the student’s own or the work of a single author or a group of related authors from the student’s genre. The module will offer practical induction into learning skills for postgraduate study. (RM)
Indicative Syllabus Through extensive textual study and discussion, the module will identify and contextualise the theoretical preoccupations and engagement among producers and consumers of creative writing using representative novels, plays, and poetry. This will involve discussions of representation, political orientation, biography, theories and approaches. A wide range of perspectives will be employed by the student to read the texts chosen.
Learning Outcomes Learning outcomes & Research Methods skills (RM)
On successful completion of the module students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
1. analyse and evaluate ways in which theories and critical perspectives within writing are reflected and engaged with in selected texts;
2. critically analyse particular literary texts and chosen authors within their genre with specific regard to the writerly engagement with literary, critical, cultural and writing theories;
3. synthesise a range of critical, theoretical and writerly approaches that have emerged and evaluate the variety of application to the texts studied.
4. follow the academic conventions for the presentation of research. (RM)
5. use the research tools in the Learning Centre cogently; and approach longer pieces of writing confidently, in the knowledge of appropriate strategies for the scholarly discipline of Creative Writing. (RM)
