Brief Description | The purpose of this module is to give a broad understanding of the critical and craft debates within Creative Writing, and also to provide a general but solid knowledge of what triggers the student’s writing processes and how they may use these to develop their own creative writing. The emphasis will be placed on the craft of writing plays, poetry and prose, and the materials used will be drawn from the student’s own creative writing and other exemplars of excellence or paucity of craft. The module will offer critical reflection on the methods and purposes of the subject and / or practice, within a broader context of enquiry. (RM) |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will concentrate on the close critical analysis of students' own work and the work of their peers. Work produced by the students may be examined in terms of the students' creative processes and how writing is triggered and developed as well as in terms of the craft, tropes and influences involved in making the text. |
Learning Outcomes | Learning outcomes & Research Methods skills (RM) On successful completion of the module students will demonstrate the ability to: 1. analyse and evaluate their own creative processes in relation to their own writing; 2. analyse and critically evaluate a range of craft and theoretical issues related to writing in general and their own work in particular; 3. synthesise wider perspectives on critical and to a lesser degree theoretical reactions to creative and critical writing in general; 4. be critically self-aware respecting the methods that they use in their own writing.
