Brief Description | This module introduces students to the sociology of technology as a theoretical framework for examining the social aspects of information and communication technologies. This module broadens students' critical perspective on the social, political and economic aspects of ICTs in various contexts, e.g. commerce, industry, education, medicine, defence, engineering, law, finance and government agencies. |

Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to: a) evaluate the social consequences of the widespread diffusion of communication and information technologies b) examine the applications and implications of ICTs in a variety of contexts c) propose and defend the key principle of actively shaping technological change rather than passively responding to it d) apply the competing philosophical perspectives to the information society, post-industrialism, globalisation.
