Brief Description This key module will enable students to understand how ICT is managed within a business environment and, in particular how a business plans for the future. This module explores business concepts and models for brick and mortar organisations as well as e-Business focused organisations. The aim is to convey an understanding of the diversity of the internal and external environments of organisations today and approaches to exploiting them from an ICT perspective. Students understanding of business operations and information systems infrastructure will be expanded.
Indicative Syllabus This module will concentrate on managing IT within organisations. A key focus will be the process of Business Planning to support the internal and external organisational environment. A business view of these environments, along with that of e-business and information systems requirements will be investigated. Most IT systems development is driven as a project in which the central issues are duration, cost and staffing. Project planning techniques assisted by appropriate software packages These have to be managed in order to deliver a product that is on time, to budget and meeting the client requirements. The importance of IT developments within this process will be reiterated and recent trends and issues will influence lecture topics.
Learning Outcomes

i  Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) explain the structure and functions supporting an organisation
b) discuss how a business plans for the future
c) appreciate how interdependent the IT strategy is with the planning of the business
d) explain why capital expenditure (e.g. business improvements, IT etc.) must be totally justified
e) identify that there may be real risks in not making changes although costs are involved
f) evaluate the implications of advancing technology on both business and IT.
g) Assess the business case (advantages & disadvantages) for e-business particularly in B2C and B2B (including issues such as purchase spontaneity, volume, market reach, geographical reach, security, trust, risk)
h) Explain the different stages of development of e-businesses and e-business models
i) Describe the IT architecture/infrastructure of an e-business and discuss the various components (overview from a business perspective)
j) Explain the scope of project management
k) Evaluate appropriate project management packages
l) apply skills relevant for academic progression and career development within the sector.
m) advance their academic prospects and career prospects by identifying research opportunities and sector trends.

Communication and Literacy: Literature review is a key element of the course work
Problem Solving: The assignment and associated seminars will involve case study work.
Independent Learning and Working: The students will develop skills in investigating a topic during their course work.
Working with others: Group work on case studies in seminars.
Information and Communications Technology and Specific Vocational Skills: Students will further develop their abilities in using the Internet as an investigative tool to explore e-business.

Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/student contact: approximately 20% including, lectures and group discussions.
Student: approximately 80% private study including, team discussions, background reading and group-work
